Are You Using Linkbait?

Linkbait is a popular term among internet marketers. It could be a good thing to some, but not all the time. But the real issue is… do bloggers know how to linkbait?.

What is Linkbait?

Linkbaiting is the term for writing articles or posts that force people to react. In the online world, a ‘reaction’ means your website or article will be mentioned and linked to in various places like forums, blogs and even social networks. With the way discussions are done over the internet right now, people do more than just comment on your blog post. They tell people about it by linking to you on their twitter pages, facebook walls, etc. A linkbait is an article or a comment that attracts traffic to your blog.

So, is linkbaiting a good thing?

Linkbait can be ethical or not, depending on the situation. If you have a blog that most parents read, talking about a controversial parenting topic is a good linkbait. But if you have a parenting blog and then you suddenly talk about the latest showbiz gossip that doesn’t interest your readers, your linkbait isn’t very effective. But some people will argue that linkbait, no matter what kind of reaction it incites, is good.

Linkbait Writing 101

There are certain types of posts or content that seem to attract much linking. Tutorial posts are impressive, especially when the topic is on a new innovation or a freaky invention. Controversial opinion articles that tackle a new angle are always popular. “Exposure” articles get people curious but could seriously compromise your credibility.

Inflammatory pieces make very good linkbaits but that doesn’t mean you have to resort to writing these to grab attention. Just look at the way tabloids sell their stories.

The only rule of thumb to linkbaiting is this… always be accountable for anything you write about online.

How to Use Links to Receive Link Backs

Link love is one of the most common types of linkbaits. The act of linking to another blogger’s post can also drive traffic to your blog. Moreover, if the other blogger uses Wordpress, your blog post’s URL will instantly appear on the blogger’s website as trackback.

A blog is an interaction with other people. Your website will attract a certain audience. Your blog will steadily rise in popularity with every useful post or linkbait that you put out. You will get to know your audience soon enough when people start commenting on your posts. Always think of your audience when writing linkbait articles.
